"Ageing well is about quality of life. Research holds the key to unlocking the possibilities of ageing well"

Medicines can cure disease and improve quality of life for many Australians. Equally, they can do harm if taken incorrectly.

Here are some tips to avoid risks and help you get the best results from your medicines:

  • take medicines only as directed
  • always clarify with your doctor the right way to take your medicine before you begin to use it
  • make sure your doctor is aware of any other medication you are taking
  • always tell your doctor about past problems you have had with drugs, such as loss of appetite, rashes or dizziness
  • review your drug record on each visit with your doctor
  • contact your doctor straight away if you experience any problems with your medicine
Do not:
  • Stop taking a prescription drug without your doctor's approval, even if you feel better
  • Take more/less than the prescribed dose
  • Mix alcohol and medication without your doctor's approval
  • Take drugs prescribed for someone else
When taking any medication it is important for you to understand what medicines you are taking, how you should take them and any possible side effects you may expect. If you have any questions relating to medicines you are taking, consult you doctor.
